Fiber is a carbohydrate present in plant foods. It is crucial in maintaining a regular gastrointestinal function as it gives bulk and softness to our stool, thereby facilitating bowel movements and preventing constipation. By averting constipation and the consequent stress on our colon, fiber also helps avert more serious gastrointestinal conditions like diverticulitis (inflammation of the intestine) and IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome, a disorder characterized by abdominal pain, bloating and flatulence). Furthermore, a diet rich in fiber has been linked to lower risk of Type II diabetes (fiber slows down the absorption of sugar into the bloodstream, thus avoiding a sudden spike in blood glucose) and heart disease (fiber decreases harmful LDL cholesterol levels).

Açai is a good source of fiber. A single 100g (3.5oz) serving of pure açai (like Wonderfruit Açai® Real Pure) contains 3g of fiber, or about 12% of daily recommended value. Thus, a 400g (14oz.) bowl of pure açai (the way we like to have it) contributes about half of one's daily fiber needs. Not bad for a fruit that is better known for its antioxidants and heart-healthy fats!
